When people think of planting it’s almost always from seed. Plant propagation via seed is a special way to propagation as it is the only sexual plant propagation method. All others are asexual, which means that the new plants are genetically identical to the parent plant. Planting from seed produces new genetic expressions.
All common annual vegetables are planted from seed, with the exception of potatoes. Any plants, in fact, that live and die within 12-18 months will put a lot of their energy into producing seed and will likely be a good candidate for propagation via seed. Always remember flower first, then seed. The life cycle of the plant always follows the pattern: Flower–>Fruit (if any)–>Seed. If you spot a big, showy flower on a plant, take a look around for a dried flower and check it out to see if it contains any obvious seed. Likewise, if you’re eating a fruit and it contains seeds (citrus, papaya, melon, etc), think seed!
